Verizon officially kills off New Every Two upgrade discount program

There’s already been plenty of evidence over the past couple weeks to call this a lock, but let’s just go ahead and close the loop on this one: Verizon’s official FAQ list has been updated to indicate that its New Every Two upgrade discount program is toast. In short, that means that new lines of Verizon service won’t be eligible for an equipment discount — which used to run between $30 and $100 — after your two-year contract is up, and folks that are currently enrolled in an NE2-eligible plan will only be able to redeem the discount one more time before being taken out of it. The move kind of dovetails with Verizon’s decision a few months back to bump the smartphone ETF to a groan-inducing $350, and it seems to be part of a larger industry trend toward making phones wincingly expensive to replace. Don’t drop that Droid X , folks! Note: To be clear, you’ll still be eligible for normal subsidized pricing once you pass into the upgrade period on your contract — you just won’t get an extra discount on top of that. Sprint drops Galaxy Tab down to $300, undercuts everyone but US Cellu

What now, Verizon? Just a few days after Big Red lowered the price of Samsung’s Galaxy Tab to $500 off-contract , Sprint’s version has shed $100 — which means you can now score it for $300 on a two-year deal. As long as you’re willing to put your name on the dotted line, that now means that Sprint can put you into a Tab for less money than anyone but regional carrier US Cellular, which offers it for a bargain-basement $200. Interestingly, Sprint’s shift comes on the heels of an LTE-tweaked version of the Tab for Verizon with a faster processor and better camera, suggesting that a WiMAX model could definitely be in the works these guys — which might be what this “industry first” event is all about early next month. Pure speculation on our part, but it’d make some sense. Sprint drops Galaxy Tab down to $300, undercuts everyone but US Cellular originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 12 Jan 2011 16:36:00 EDT. Verizon Wireless turns on 16 new cell sites in NYC, we can’t imagine

In what can only be called an amazing example of extremely coincidental timing, Verizon has announced that it’s throwing the switch on 16 new 3G Cells in the greater New York Metro area. Alas, they won’t be spreading the LTE love across the Empire State, but with such an added signal boost in the Boroughs we’d say the company is in reasonably good shape to handle a massive influx of customers. You know, just in case . There’s a full list of all the new towers in the PR below. iPhone Personal Hotspot feature headed to all iPhones in iOS 4.3?

So, by now you’ve had a chance to digest the fact that Verizon ‘s getting the iPhone, right? A standout from yesterday’s news is of course the iPhone Personal Hotspot feature that those lucky red devils are being treated to. Hopefully the rest of us won’t have to remain envious for to long, though — BGR says its sources have confirmed that that feature is headed to all iPhones once iOS 4.3 lands. The word is the OS version with this shiny treat will be 8F5148B with a baseband version of 04.08.00. Of course, your carrier is likely going to have to be on board, a-la tethering support, but once that dust settles not only will you be able to tether your device, but your friends will be able to join in — and rack up your data usage, too. So sit back, relax, and all will be revealed if and when this bridges the gap between rumor and reality. iPhone Personal Hotspot feature headed to all iPhones in iOS 4.3? originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 12 Jan 2011 09:53:00 EDT. The Daily Show reacts to Verizon iPhone, Jon Stewart gets a little ex

Were you excited about yesterday’s iPhone announcement ? Not so much as The Daily Show, which spent a whole seven minutes and 18 seconds out of its 30 minutes of programming to celebrate the announcement — and certainly not sparing the whip when it comes to AT&T. Jon Stewart appeared to be somewhat excited, screaming in excitement at being able to use “the world’s most popular almost phone” as, well, an actual phone. See it for yourself below.
